Shenzhen University offers what i actually want to qualify in. Architecture goes with civil engineering. Therefore the basics of civil engineering can help me become improved and versatile in my field as an architecture. TSINGUA UNIVERSITY on the otherhand only offers Architecture Design. However, I believe they can give me the best of their Architectural knowledge.

Being born in a culturally diverse and heritage rich country, architecture and art has always played a huge role in captivating my attention. Back in 2011, my parents kept telling me to join a medical school after high school graduation. But the excitement that I had after seeing a documentary about Louis Kahn kept telling me that maybe one day, I’ll also be able to design a building. Maybe not as beautiful as the one on the TV screen. But surely this is what I want to be. A maker of buildings. I didn’t know until my English teacher told me that a person who designs buildings was called an Architect. It was with astonishment that I thought how an ordinary clay brick got transformed into such beautiful structures. This ignited in me an ever-growing curiosity and it is this passion towards architecture that keeps me going.
Cracking a highly competitive entrance exam (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) with 86th rank got me into the Department of Architecture, Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in India. For a person with interest in variety of creative and extracurricular activities, the college turned out to be a swarm of opportunities for me.
The past four years was a period of self-realization. Heading different design teams for various events, from college level expos like ‘Dyuthi’ to national level architecture symposiums like ‘Design 360’ gave me the chance to look at design and architecture from a more sophisticated perspective. Design goes hand in hand with technology. This was proven with one of the happiest achievements early in the college days when I teamed up with some of my friends from the Computer Science and Electronic Engineering departments and launched ‘Walat’, a mobile application for card-less ATM transactions. The first of its kind in India. This won us the state award for the best start up in 2015 under the Start-Up Village initiative organized by the Govt. of Kerala. I was also fortunate to work for the Google Development Group, Cochin Chapter as a designer for a short period of time. In my sophomore period of studies, doing freelance architecture and design works helped me gain some knowledge of what’s happening in the professional world. In November 2017, I was entrusted with the responsibility of co-ordinating a national level urban design workshop ‘Unveiling Duality’, which was headed by Prof. K.T. Ravindran, founder of the Institute of Urban Designers India. As part of the urban design studio, I also headed a team of students to study and document the architectural characteristics of the heritage town of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. With guidance from my studio in charge Prof. Lakshmi S.R. and the Head of the Department Dr. Josna Raphael, I was successfully able to take up the role of the editor and designer of a detailed study report of the same which is going to be published soon. Recently, I was privileged to take up the responsibility of being the chief designer of Indian Institute of Architects (Cochin Chapter) and also TEDxGECT.
Internships/Professional Experience:
It was around late 2015 that I got selected as an intern into Vastu Shilpa Consultants (Sangath), Ahmedabad, the architectural practice founded and headed by Dr. Balkrishna Doshi, one of the pioneers in Indian architecture. It was not just the studio but the city of Ahmedabad itself was rich in history and quality architecture. Free time was spent exploring creations of Kahn, Corbusier, Correa and Doshi along with the historic remains as well. During weekends I managed to find time to travel to neighbouring states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Chandigarh. They had to offer a huge variety of styles ranging from Buddhist Caves to Havelis to a completely planned modern city. 2016 turned out to be one of the most important years of my life as it kept pouring a lot of opportunities for explorations and learning. Working with Doshi and his team grew in me a passion towards purity and integrity towards the profession. It helped me realize that this profession has a greater responsibility for the society and the world.
Later in the year, I was selected as an intern into yet another well-renowned architecture practice, Stapati, headed by Ar. Tony Joseph, who is also the founder and principal of Avani Institute of Design. The environment in the office helped me widen my ambition and perspective and taught me how architecture is closely related to other fields like art and craft. It was during this period that I decided that I wanted to continue studying architecture even after undergraduate studies. Early in 2017, I assisted Ar. George Seemon (Partner, Stapati Bangalore) to prepare a presentation for Xandari Harbour, Kochi, an adaptive reuse resort project which won the National Award for the best hospitality project. The practice also won 9 State Awards during the same time, among which 6 of the presentations were my contribution.
During both my internships, I was alloted to mentor senior architects and had the opportunity to work on various projects like Nalanda University, Aronya College, Ahmedabad Art Gallery, several residences, resorts, etc. My responsibilities included design development, conceptual ideas, detail drawings, physical and 3D models, 3D visualizations, photography, site visits, documentations, presentations etc.
Undergraduate (B.Arch. ) Thesis :
I believe good architecture should cater to the needs of society. My final undergraduate architectural thesis titled “Deliverance and Architecture” officially began in the last week of December 2017. The aim of the project is to find an architectural design solution in the city of Varanasi, one of the oldest and most important religious cities in India, for two groups of people seeking deliverance, or moksha, meaning ‘escape’ in Hindu mythology. One seeking moksha of the spirit from the tangible world and the other seeking escape from the social evil of destitution after becoming a widow, a form of living Sati (act of widows being burnt with the corpse of the husband), prominent in the Northern parts of India.
The challenge lies in incorporating two diverse and contrasting groups of people in the same campus and also integrating with it an international cultural centre. Intense research on architecture for healing and for spiritual nirvana is being done along with a detailed study of Varanasi and its history. This would help translate the micronarratives of the city into a meaningful architectural language in the later stages of the project. Furthermore, the solution aims at creating awareness and a measure to reduce the pollution levels in the holy river Ganges, which is on a high due to intense religious activities on its banks. The thesis project has 25 credit points and lasts for a period of 6 months (one semester).
Architecture as a Specialization:
I chose architecture as a specialization for my masters because of my interest in design of buildings with attention to detail and environmental concerns. The profession requires teamwork, leadership and respect for another one’s opinion. Even though I want to specialize in this track, I would surely use the chance to expand my knowledge in Building Technology, Urbanism and Landscape Design, which are inevitable parts of any building when you look at it from a larger perspective. The chosen field of study will surely help me design functional, aesthetically coherent and sustainable buildings. I believe timeless architecture is made when a building combines form, function, sustainable methods of construction and deference for the context.
I’m hoping to study in Tsinghua University as it will surely help me address the problems of the world through sensible design of built environment and integrating apt technology with a vision for future. I would like to practice the profession after my studies. I believe it is very important to share the knowledge gained with younger generations. Hence, I’m very interested in the profession of teaching. I wish to help developing and under-developed countries have better built environments and knowledge on how to attain them through intelligent integration of design and technology with utmost reverence for history and context.
Why Tsinghua University ?
The educational standard deeply rooted in history and context, balanced with integration of technology and technicality offered at Tsinghua University will surely help me in becoming a better architect and a responsible human being. I believe it will help me learn, understand and provide better solutions to the most important technological and social needs in the built environment. Watching and interacting with architects and professors during my internship and college days has greatly increased my passion to learn more and to keep getting better. I strongly believe that architecture is a multifaceted profession which needs a great deal of attention to detail combined with a very proactive work ethic. It is a balanced composure of art and science, and to become a good architect, one needs to think creative and also give attention to the scientific aspects of design. Coming from a culturally rich country like India, I believe I’ll be able to add to the diversity of the student community. I would like to experience the incredibly rich and vibrant atmosphere of Tsinghua University and China. Exchange knowledge, learn new cultures, make new friends and explore new places. Being in a multicultural realm, the University will surely help me become a better person with more respect for humanity and the diversity it resonates through cultures and ethnicities.- 4 Years ago

For me, the decision to pursue the masters program offered by Tsinghua University only presents itself as a very conscious step in the right direction especially given my background and future ambitions in architecture and the natural environment. With plans to use my knowledge of Masters of Architecture to enlighten developers and architects and mentor juniors to design and develop better quality projects more sustainably, the masters programme seems faultlessly tailored to provide the skill set that is required in order to achieve my vision for the country as a whole.

Program Description
Introduction
The School of Architecture at Tsinghua University is the first in China to offer an accredited Master degree to foreign students. The purpose of the program is to develop a major new platform of architectural education in response to the rapid urbanization of China.
The program offers a nationally-accredited professional Master degree, Master in Architecture (M. Arch II). With a particular focus on the architecture and design in China, the School of Architecture gives graduate students, preferably professional Bachelor degree holders, the opportunity to pursue advanced learning in professional knowledge and independent design research. The program adopts the credit system. A total of 27 credits, earned through courses and studios, are required for the students.
Courses
Courses can be divided into 5 main categories: 1) studios, 2) theory, 3) seminars, 4) site visits, and 5) optional public courses. The course menu also covers different academic fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, and profession-related knowledge in China.
The standard language for all courses is English.
Students are required to take the following studios and complete 18 credits: Architectural Design, Landscape Planning and Design, Urban Design, and Final Thesis.
Each studio is co-instructed by one internationally established professor and two coordinating Chinese professors. Design critics are selected from a pool established foreign and domestic architects currently active in China. Studio topics are often real projects in some of China’s most architecture "hot spots", including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi\'an, Suzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Lijiang and Qingdao, etc. In these studios, students are challenged to tackle difficult and sometimes controversial social, political, economic, ethnic and religious issues that are unique to contemporary China.
Students are required to complete 4 credits in seminars focusing on important issues in contemporary Chinese architecture, contemporary Chinese urban development, and heritage preservation. Each seminar is co-instructed by 2-3 professors and features guest panelists, including senior government officials, distinguished scholars, and developers.
Students are also required to complete courses on theory. These courses cover a wide range of fields: history, design theory, urban theory, contemporary practice, building technology, landscape and Chinese gardening, etc. These courses feature lectures by leading figures in different fields from inside and outside of China.
In addition, there is one required credit for a “site visit” which provides students with exposure to fresh Chinese cultural and professional perspectives. The destination places are chosen from influential sites and cities of great interests of history and contemporary practice.
Optional public courses are provided by Tsinghua University, offering training in Chinese language and learning in Chinese history and culture, 4 credits in total.
